Baklava

Ingredients

  • 1 lbs melted butter
  • 1 lbs Filo
  • 1 lbs Chopped Walnuts
  • 1-2 lbs Chopped Almonds
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Allspice
  • 1/2 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp Clove
  • 2 tbls Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp Mace
  • 3 dozen Whole cloves
  • 1 batch prepared syrup

Prepared syrup

  • 3 cup sugar
  • 3 cup water
  • 1 tsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 1/2 cup honey

Instructions

Prepared Syrup

  • Add the ingerdients to a sauce pan.
    Simmer for 20 – 25 Min.
    Let cool.

Filo

  • Combine nuts and dry spices together (not the whole Cloves)
  • Butter 9" x 13" pan.
  • Place 6 sheets of filo in the botton of the pan.
  • Brush with melted butter.
  • Spread one thin layer of nut mixture on top of the filo
  • Cover with one sheet of filo and repeat until 6 sheets left.
  • Butter remaining 6 filo sheets
  • Cut into diamands (see picture)
  • (Squares would work just as well just not as pretty with less extra pieces)
  • insert a clove in center of each diamond.
  • Bake for 1 hr. at 325
  • When brown remove from pan and pour all but 1/3 of the mixture evenly over the top. (Layers may temp float)
  • Allow to cool.
  • While cooling boil remaining syrup for about 5 min. Making into a very very thick syrup.
  • Pour over the top evenly (this makes the baklava look the very best).
  • Cool entire pan for several hours.
  • Serve in cupcake paper.
